Fabrication of Hastelloy C-22
Although ductile enough to be formed by cold working, intermediate annealing may be necessary due to work hardening. Forging should be performed between 1750-2050° F followed by rapid cooling. Annealing can be performed at a temperature range between 2020-2150° F followed by a rapid quench. Cooling at an accelerated rate avoids the formation of detrimental phases which form between 1400-1800° F. Welding can be done by gas tungsten-arc, gas metal-arc and shielded metal-arc processes.

Excellent Resistance to Corrosion HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium wrought alloy that is generally considered a versatile corrosion-resistance alloy. C-276 alloy is an improved wrought version of alloy C in that it usually doesn't need to be solution heat-treated after welding and has vastly improved fabricability. This alloy resists the formation of grain-boundary precipitaties in the weld heat-affected zone, thus making it suitable for most chemical process applications in the as-welded condition. However, in environments where attack of the C-276 alloy weld joint is experienced, C-22® weld filler materials should be considered.
C-276 alloy has excellent resistance to localized corrosion and to both oxidizing and reducing media. Because of its versatility, C-276 alloy can be used where "upset" conditions are likely to occur or in multipurpose plants.
HASTELLOY C-276 alloy has excellent resistance to a wide variety of chemical process environments, including strong oxidizers such as ferric and cupric chlorides, hot contaminated media (organic and inorganic), chlorine, formic and acetic acids, acetic anhydride, and seawater and brine solutions. It is used in flue gas desulfurization systems because of its excellent resistance to sulfur compounds and chloride ions encounted in most scrubbers. C-276 alloy has excellent resistance to pitting and to stress-corrosion cracking. It is also one of the few materials that withstands the corrosive effects of wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide.
HASTELLOY®: The Name To Trust
In aggressive/corrosive service, when nothing else works, many industries have traditionally turned to HASTELLOY® C-276 alloy. Many years of outstanding performance in a variety of industrial applications have confirmed the advantages of using the alloy. Materials engineers in the chemical processing and other industries have grown accustomed to specifying its high performance based on laboratory testing, field trials and/or prior experience.
Some "generic" alloy N10276 products fail to measure up to the performance industry expects from HASTELLOY C-276
alloy which is produced via exacting processes, and backed by years of experience in chemistry control, thermal-mechanical processing, testing and qualifications to rigid standards.
When the alloy is specified by the UNS Number, discerning questions should be asked for assurance of HASTELLOY C-276 alloy performance:
• Does the product possess the clean, homogeneous microstructure so important for good resistance to
aqueous corrosion?
• How does the product perform in tough environments (e.g., rigorous pitting conditions) for which this material
is most often specified?
• Is the corrosion resistance of the welded product, in a discriminating test, up to par?
Family of Corrosion-Resistant Alloys
B-3® alloy
Same excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid and other strongly reducing chemicals as B-2 alloy, but with significantly better thermal stability, fabricability and stress corrosion cracking resistance.
HYBRID- BC1® alloy
A new Ni-Cr-Mo alloy with superior resistance to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids, without the drawbacks of the Ni-Mo and Zr materials. Its resistance to these key chemicals is much greater than that of the popular Ni-Cr-Mo (C-type) alloys, yet it shares with them the outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice attack in chloride salt solutions, and even withstands high levels of oxidizing impurities that the Ni-Mo alloys cannot cope with.
C-4 alloy
High-temperature stability in the 1200-1900°F (650-1040°C) range as evidenced by good ductility and corrosion resistance. Virtually the same corrosion resistance as alloy C-276.
C-22® alloy
Better overall corrosion resistance in oxidizing corrosives than C-4, C-276 and 625 alloys. Outstanding resistance to localized corrosion and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Best alloy to use as universal weld filler metal to resist corrosion of weldments.
C-22HS® alloy
This alloys was designed to exhibit corrosion resistance comparable to other C-type alloys, but which can be heat treated to obtain approximately double the yield strength.
C-276 alloy
Versatile, corrosion resistant alloy. Very good resistance to reducing, and mildly oxidizing corrosives. Excellent stress corrosion cracking resistance with very good resistance to localized attack.
C-2000® alloy
Most versatile, corrosion resistant alloy with excellent resistance to uniform corrosion in oxidizing or re-ducing environments. Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and superior resistance to localized corrosion as compared to C-276 alloy.
G-30® alloy
Many advantages over other metallic and non-metallic materials in handling phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, fluoride environments and oxidizing acid mixtures.
G-35® alloy
Excellent resistance to corrosion in highly oxidizing media and acidic chloride environments.
N alloy
Good resistance to aging and embrittlement and good fabricability. It has excellent resistance to hot fluoride salts in the temperature range of 1300°F to 1600°F (705°C-870°C).
